I wanted to add sata capacity to a pc i was building from scratch for my 10 year old son and decided on this product because of the high reviews it received. The adapter took a little more force to pop into the mobo expansion slot. I downloaded the most recent drivers available from the manufacturer's web site as a matter of practice. Installing the drivers was problematic because the raid driver kept being configured even though i would repeatedly select the non-raid configuration. Using the drivers on the included cd resulted in the same raid driver being installed.
After three hours of unsuccessful attempts, i set aside the adapter for possible use later in a raid configuration. The fact that i ordered this sata raid card reveals something about my computer: it's in need of an upgraded motherboard. Still, this little pci card has given my motherboard a reprieve. When i bought a new dvd/cd writer, i discovered that i could not use it in my machine without some modifications. The drive was sata, while my machine only had the old style pata connectors. A search on the internet solved my dilemma-a pci card that would allow me to use the sata drive on my machine.
I tried a pata-to-sata bridge, which converts the sata item to pata; but because of lack of space in my tower, i could not reinstall the drive properly using the bridge (a circuit that plugs into the sata connectors on the end of the case and allows the pata connectors to be used). The pci card solved the problem. A mini cd containing the drivers and sata raid software is included with the pci card, making it a snap to install.
