There are 3 modes with which to play the game: Casual with quicker hints and skip features and sparkles for active areas, Advanced with longer recharge and no sparkles, and Hardcore with no hints. Other times you will need to use another object in the scene or from you inventory. Your Diary will have information on the tasks at hand. There is also a handy map for the area that you are in.

The Hint system, in addition to helping you find hidden objects, frequently gives very good information on what to do next. Secret Doves: There are 56 doves (or basically birds of any sort, real or imaginary) hidden in the game. They are actually not too hidden, but it’s easy to forget to look for them. You can an award if you find 50 of them.
