Hi there,I saw that this is a similar problem to what I've been having. I have Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit) and I'm having trouble installing KB938371 as well. However, the error message I keep getting is 'Code 80070020'.
I know it hasn't been already installed, I've check my update history and all and I've tried installing it like 20 times. It repeatedly tries to configure updates upon reboot after the install, and says 'updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes.' And then it reboots again. IDK what the deal is, I've heard about Bitdefender and other anti-virus programs being an issue sometimes, but I've disabled mine and it didn't help.

Ok,I ran that batch file, but the only thing that happened is my windows update was kind of reset. The update still failed though.it will say configuring updates; stage 1 of 3 and when it gets to 2% on stage 2 it says shutting down. Then on reboot it tries to configure again and says 'updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes.'
And then reboots on its own again. And, now it randomly will log me off and reboot my computer when I'm doing something (it goes through the shutdown process and tries to update and fails). Finally, i dont know if these are related, but one of my optional updates for Conexant High Definition Audio Driver will try to install, say it was successful, but then my sound won't work and I have to roll back to my last driver (it still works fine so this isn't that big of a deal).

Please repeat the above steps with the 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' service.You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know.Step 2 Register Windows Update component1. Click the Start Button, click 'All programs', and click 'Accessories'.2.

Both the Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transfer services are set to automatic, and can be started or stopped any time. All the.dll files were registered ok. I disabled the startup programs and services as guided, then rebooted. I tried installing the update manually, which failed at the same point as before. Then I rebooted and tried starting the Windows Update Service and the Background Intelligent Transfer service, after which the tray icon appeared.
However it wouldn't let me open the Windows Update manager, so I put the startups and boot services back to default (all enabled). Your post was the first one I found that matched my problem with KB938371: It installs successfully, but then it won't configure correctly at the Stage 2 when it reaches 2%.I have been emailing MS Support for the past three weeks. I am now exchanging emails with a 'Vista Expert' there.
He has had me rename some files, hide the update and reload it, use the Administrator account, etc. Nothing has worked so far.
